Three times a year–each year–for the past 10 years we have been honored to be able to partner with Portland State Universities Senior Capstone Program which allows students from PSU to come to CPS and “teach” lessons in the arts to our students.
This year three groups of PSU teachers designed and planned lessons for the students here at CPS. The lessons included students collaborating on a whole class mural that shows who students are individually and collectively; students designing t-shirts to make social statements by combining text and image; and students making personal “zines” that show what is important to them.
CPS students had this to say about the experience:
“ I like it because I like expressing myself and this allows me to do that.”
“It gives us a chance to see what others can do-and since everyone’s piece has a meaning it’s cool.”
“…o my goodness…just that!!”
From the PSU students;
“Exploring the collective consciousness is a good thing…better than coffee one might say…it’s so nice to see the students engaged in what they are doing.”
The lessons always end with all students sharing their work and thanking each other for the experience. We at CPS are thankful for this partnership with PSU.
And this year one group even got to experience/participate in a Fire Drill! Talk about throwback Thursday!
