This quarter in Writing Around Portland, students are focusing on vlogging and blogging about destinations around Portland. In the first week, students identified restaurants and places that they would like to experience. Each week, we venture out into the city to try new experiences to write about and potentially, create videos about.
We began the quarter at 22 Below, the new Thai rolled ice cream shop on SW Jefferson. Using spatulas, the ice cream maker swirls ingredients on a metal pan that is frozen to negative 22 degrees, then scrapes the ice cream into rolls. With various savory, but mostly sweet options atop rolls of ice cream, there was no avoiding a sugar rush.
We then headed to 82nd and Division to continue our tour of specialty restaurants with visits to Zero Degrees and Mojo’s Crepes. While Zero Degrees offers a bevy of fruity beverages and Latin and Asian inspired foods, Mojo’s focuses on sugary crepes and Japanese-style hot dogs. Zero Degrees focuses solely on the food, but Mojo’s offers old school video games and a room with three pool tables, of which students took full advantage.
After a week back at school to upload videos and work on blogs and vlogs, we hitched a ride downtown on the Friendtorship bus. From there, the class ventured to the Keller Fountain, which we were delighted to discover had been filled and was running at full force. We then continued our journey to the Waterfront where we discovered a gaggle of newly hatched goslings. As the term progresses, we will continue our adventures to the Witch’s Castle at Forest Park and the Japanese Gardens.
