This quarter, Centennial Park students have had the opportunity to explore the world of Harry Potter through text, movies, and exploring the Pottermore website. While a few students are die hard Harry Potter fanatics, many, however are experiencing their first foray into the wizarding world. Through JK Rowling’s novel, students have studied literary elements and the hero’s journey. While we have spent time on academics, much of the class has focused on experiencing and enjoying the story itself. Because this class was offered for elective or Language Arts credit, students were able to choose their level rigor.
Wednesday afternoons in Harry Potter class are verging on relaxing. Students sip tea while reading and often listening to a dramatic interpretation of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Late in the afternoon, we take a break from the book and dive into the film adaptation, thus giving students the opportunity to compare the novel to the movie.
Students have also had the opportunity to virtually live the Hogwarts’ student experience on Rowling’s interactive website, Pottermore. Through Pottermore, students have been sorted into Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Sytherin houses. By taking quizzes on the website, they have also found their patronus, and have identified their wands.
