In spite of the rain, the new Garden-to-Table project at CPS is well underway! In January, we were awarded a generous grant from City of Gresham for a school garden, along with our Green Schools accreditation. CPS students have been very busy preparing the site for the garden – taking advantage of the few sunny days and even working in the rain! It’s hard, dirty work, but the students are enjoying being outdoors and are excited to see their garden vision become reality!
Last Saturday, a work crew of students and community members gathered at CPS for sodbusting! Did we get muddy and tired! But we made huge progress and had fun getting muddy together!
In addition to working on the garden site, students are partnering with Multnomah County Master Gardeners Association, Oregon Food Bank, Outgrowing Hunger, Portland Nursery, and Portland Parks and Recreation. We are learning so much from our amazing volunteers and it is exciting for everyone when we bring the community into our school, and our school into the community!
Within the school, students are also collaborating with the Culinary Arts classes to develop a menu that includes the foods grown in our very own garden. Students are addressing real world issues such as fighting hunger, food sustainability, eating local, providing equal access to healthy foods, and building strong vibrant communities through food. They are studying soil ecosystems, soil chemistry, and organic alternatives to weed and pest control.
Come and see our beautiful garden project soon!
